Exploring Shapes

One of the deep understandings of our My Voice Is Powerful theme is how we can 'explore the arts in our world as a way to express ourselves'.

Building on from our About Me projects, when we taught others about who we are and what we care about, we are now each working towards creating a geometric art piece that expresses more about ourselves and in doing so allows us to learn more about some important mathematical concepts, as well as the exploration of cultural patterns and visual art techniques.

The final products will be designed by each of us to include many geometric shapes and patterns. But as we are in the initial stages, we are currently building our knowledge about the features and different characteristics of shapes before we can begin doing more of our own self-directed investigations relating to how shapes are used in art.

One of the first activities we did was a a chalk talk routine. This kind of activity is usually used when there is a provocative question to be considered by students, however we found it a great way to make some prior knowledge visible and allow everyone to contribute without several students dominating the conversation. We simply responded to the question, 'What do we know about shapes?' It was interesting for us all to wander around and examine what everyone else had written or drawn to show their understandings.

Since the chalk talk routine, groups of children have been working with both Mr K and Mrs Harris to build a knowledge platform, both developing our understanding of the physical properties of 2 and 3 dimensional shapes, but also growing our geometric vocabulary relating to shapes and other related geometry strands, like patterns, position and orientation. Many of us have found it so interesting that parts of shape names, like 'tri' and 'dec' for example, are there for a reason, as they represent a number.

Keep an eye on our twitter feed for updates on this project. We look forward to starting the design of our final art pieces over the next couple of weeks.
